The Ignition Programme
The Ignition Programme is an interdisciplinary learning project that combines practical mechanics with real qualification pathways.
Designed for young people who benefit from hands-on, purposeful learning, the programme takes place at an off-site go karting centre and gives participants the opportunity to work towards a recognised qualification in mechanics, while developing skills and confidence that extend far beyond the track. Below are some images from recent sessions, along with a summary of what young people gain from taking part.
Dream It. Believe It. Achieve It.
Many of the young people who come to us have had negative experiences of education. We stop that in its tracks and get them back in the race. Through positive, measured risk taking, we help them start believing in themselves and becoming the young people we know they can be. They go on to be safe, happy and achieving aspirational goals that are tailored to them.
The Ignition Programme is one of the ways we bring this to life.
What does The Ignition Programme offer?
Accredited Qualifications
Young people work towards the SEG Level 1 Award in Motor Vehicle Maintenance, with the option to progress to the next level. A genuine, nationally recognised achievement they can be proud of and build a future on.
Practical, Hands-On Learning
Sessions are built around doing, not just listening. Working on real vehicles at a go karting centre gives young people context, purpose and a reason to engage.
Numeracy and Literacy
Maths and communication skills are woven naturally into every session, from reading technical instructions to calculating measurements. Learning feels relevant because it is.
Team Building
Young people work together, support each other and develop trust. The collaborative nature of the programme builds social skills and confidence in equal measure.
Sustainable Positive Destinations
The Ignition Programme is not just about mechanics. It is about opening doors. Participants leave with qualifications, skills and a clearer sense of where they want to go, whether that is further education, training or employment in an industry they care about.
In their own words:
“I’m working towards a qualification in mechanics and I want to come back next year and complete the next level. I don’t think I want to be a mechanic, but I want to work in the motor repair industry. And the lunches are good too.”

“It’s good fun. I love going to it and you get to do a bit of racing as well.”
